Fire Extinguishers are a vital piece of equipment that are often overlooked, they need to be serviced and checked on an annual basis to ensure they are kept in good working order so they are ready to use if you need them. If an extinguisher is in need of replacement we are usually able to do this the same day or within a couple of days depending on stock and quantity available at local distributors.
There are many different types and sizes of extinguishers available - all of which are for the purpose of putting out a fire either in its entirity or enough to aid escape but they all work differently and should be chosen depending on the type of fire most likely to happen in that area. There are 6 categories of fire involving different substances:
Class A - Combustible carbon-based solids such as paper, wood and textiles
Class B - Flammable liquids such as paraffin, petrol, diesel or oil (but not for cooking oils - see Class F)
Class C - Flammable gases such as butane, propane or methane
Class D - Burning metals such as aluminium, lithium or magnesium
Fires caused by electrical equipment - this is indicated by an electric spark symbol and not the letter E
Class F - Fats and cooking oils
We are able to assist you in choosing the correct extinguishers for the area they cover, if you would like a quote please don't hesitate to contact us.
Emergency lighting is very important to ensure safety in the event of a power cut or fire. It is designed to illuminate escape routes such as hallways, stairways and exits along with key points such as extinguisher locations. It's recommended that regular servicing of emergency lighting systems is carried out to ensure that they are kept in a good working order should you need to rely on them. This involves the users undertaking basic inspections as well as a competent person annually testing and inspecting the light units and making any necessary repairs.
At Birmingham Fire and Safety LTD we are experienced at testing and maintaining emergency lights to BS5266 to make sure you are never left in the dark in the event of an emergency. Emergency lights run on a battery and the unit is triggered to come on when there is no power on the lighting circuit. Over time these batteries can degrade and eventually stop working which can be hazardous if the power is lost. For each light unit, we test that it illuminates and that the batteries are capable of powering the unit for 3 hours and once power is restored we check the batteries recharge.
If you have any questions or would like to get a quote for your emergency lighting testing, please contact us.
Fire Alarm Testing
At Birmingham Fire And Safety we test and maintain fire alarm systems to ensure you and your employees are safer in the event of a fire. Smoke detectors and heat detectors are the most common types of detectors used in fire alarm systems in residential and commercial premises. The automatic fire detection system should be serviced, inspected and tested in accordance with BS 5839. Fire alarm systems need to be serviced and tested at by a competent person at different intervals regarding whether the system is powered by mains or battery. To discuss your requirements for fire alarm testing, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Fire Alarm Testing should be carried out regularly by a competent person on an annual or a 6 monthly basis depending on the type of system (along with weekly and monthly user checks) and is an essential part of fire alarm system maintenance.
